Chandigarh, 24 January 2025: Hardev Singh Mattewal, former Punjab advocate general and a prominent legal figure, passed away on Thursday night in Chandigarh at the age of 74.

Mattewal, who served as the state’s advocate general four times, is survived by his son, Pavit Singh Mattewal, and daughter, Puneet Kaur Sekhon, both practicing lawyers.

According to family sources, Mattewal had been suffering from age-related ailments and struggled with his health following a heart attack and brain hemorrhage a decade ago.

His last rites were performed on Friday afternoon at the Sector 25 crematorium in Chandigarh.

Renowned for his sharp legal intellect, Mattewal was designated as a senior advocate in 1987. He held the position of Punjab’s advocate general during four terms: twice between 1990 and 1991, and later from 1998 to 2002 and 2007 to 2011. His close association with former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal was well-known.

“Punjab has lost a doyen in the field of law with the passing away of former advocate general Hardev Singh Mattewal. His astute defence of the state on crucial matters will always be remembered,” former deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal wrote on X. He added, “My deepest condolences to Pavit Singh Mattewal and the entire Mattewal family. May Waheguru grant them the strength to bear this irreparable loss.”

Mattewal’s legal legacy and dedication to Punjab’s judiciary remain highly respected, marking the end of an era in the state’s legal fraternity.
