Kolkata, 20 January 2025: A Kolkata court on Monday sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment until death for the rape and murder of a postgraduate medical trainee at RG Kar Medical College.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das, who had declared Roy guilty on Saturday, ordered the state to pay Rs 17 lakh in compensation to the victim’s family.
Despite the prosecution seeking the death penalty, the court ruled the case did not meet the “rarest of the rare” criteria required for capital punishment.
“We pray for the highest penalty to maintain people’s faith in society,” the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) lawyer told the court during the sentencing hearing.
Roy maintained his innocence, telling the court, “I am being framed as I have not committed any crime. I have not done anything, still have been held guilty.”
The brutal crime, committed on August 9 last year, triggered widespread protests and national outrage.
