Mandi, 7 November 2024 – Tremors measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale were felt in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district early Saturday morning. The earthquake, recorded at 2:26 am, had its epicenter at a depth of five kilometers underground. No casualties or damage to property have been reported.
Himachal Pradesh falls under earthquake zones four and five, making districts like Kangra, Chamba, Lahaul, Kullu, and Mandi particularly vulnerable.
Earthquakes occur due to the collision of seven tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface, which creates fault line zones. The resulting pressure from these collisions can lead to tremors like the one experienced in Mandi.
Earthquakes with magnitudes between 3.0 and 3.9, such as this one, are classified as minor and occur frequently worldwide, often causing little to no damage.
