Chandigarh, April 21: North-western India is bracing for intensified heat over the next four days, though the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that light rain may offer a reprieve by the weekend. A weather bulletin issued Tuesday indicated that while dry conditions will dominate until April 24, a fresh western disturbance is expected to bring isolated showers to Punjab and Haryana on April 26 and 27.
Meteorologists noted that maximum temperatures are likely to climb by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius during this period. Recent data shows that Bhiwani recorded the region’s highest temperature at 43.5 degrees Celsius, while Bathinda led Punjab’s heat charts at 41 degrees Celsius. The IMD has classified current daytime temperatures in both states as “appreciably above normal.”
“Heat wave conditions are likely to persist at many places in the region from April 21 to 24,” the IMD stated in its report. The department affirmed that the upcoming western disturbance will first affect the Himalayan region on April 23 before moving toward the plains.
Despite the current scorching conditions, spring rainfall has remained significantly higher than usual this year. Haryana has recorded 34 percent above-normal precipitation since March 1, while Punjab’s rainfall stands at 28 percent above average. Officials maintained that the anticipated weekend showers, accompanied by gusty winds in neighboring hilly states, should help stabilize the rising mercury levels.
