Internalizing Not Just Reciting; Global Sikh Council Calls for Sehaj Paaths

Chandigarh, April 15 –To commemorate the martyrdom of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the Global Sikh Council (GSC) has called upon Sikhs worldwide to complete Sehaj Paaths of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji by November 24, 2025, urging that the message of the Guru must be internalized, not merely recited.

In a statement, the council said these recitations will culminate in collective Bhog ceremonies held globally on the anniversary of the Guru’s martyrdom.

GSC President Lady Singh Kanwaljit Kaur and Secretary Harjeet Singh Grewal requested Gurdwara committees, Sikh organizations, and people to join the global tribute.

“This initiative honors not only Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s supreme sacrifice but also the martyrdom of Bhai Mati Das Ji and Bhai Sati Das Ji, who stood by the Guru with unwavering devotion,” they said.

The Council noted that the global recitation campaign is intended to rekindle awareness of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s spiritual legacy.

“Through this collective effort, we hope to reconnect Sikhs with the 115 Shabads and Saloks of Guru Sahib recorded in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and inspire deeper reflection on his teachings,” the statement read.

GSC also raised the need to go beyond ceremonial remembrance. “We urge the Sangat to live the essence of Gurbani by embracing truth, compassion, and selfless service,” said Grewal.

“It’s about internalizing Guru Sahib’s message, not just reciting it.”

The Council described Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji as a towering figure who laid down his life to protect religious freedom and oppose tyranny. “Dhan Guru Tegh Bahadur, Dharam di Chadar—he stood firm in the face of injustice, and we must carry his legacy forward by spreading Gurmat values,” said Kanwaljit Kaur.

GSC has also requested Sikh institutions to organize Gurbani Vichar (spiritual discourses) leading up to November 24 to help the community engage more meaningfully with Guru Sahib’s teachings.

The Council’s global call for Sehaj Paaths is intended as both a spiritual observance and a reaffirmation of Sikh identity rooted in service, justice, and remembrance.

A Sehaj Paath is a complete recitation of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, carried out at a relaxed pace without any fixed time limit.

Unlike the uninterrupted Akhand Paath, which is completed within 48 hours, the Sehaj Paath allows individuals or groups to engage with the scripture gradually—over days, weeks, or even months—depending on their own rhythm and capacity. It is often undertaken in homes and gurdwaras during moments of spiritual reflection or remembrance, allowing devotees to absorb the teachings with deeper understanding and intention.

The Paath culminates in a Bhog ceremony, which marks the formal completion and is typically accompanied by kirtan, ardas, and langar.
