Amritsar, June 1: Amritsar rural police conducted a major operation on Monday, raiding the Green Avenue residence of former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia in connection with an alleged attack on the Majitha police station. While a heavy police presence surrounded the home, officials confirmed that Majithia was not present during the search.
The raids follow a volatile incident on Sunday involving members of the Kirti Kisan Union and political supporters who gathered to protest the arrest of Jobanpreet Singh. During the demonstration, tensions escalated into what police described as a “pre-planned” attempt to forcibly release a detainee from custody.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sohail Qasim Mir stated that the group allegedly obstructed lawful police functions, damaged official property, and assaulted personnel.
“The accused obstructed the lawful functioning of the police,” SSP Mir asserted during a press briefing.
Following the event, police registered a fresh FIR against more than 50 persons at the Majitha police station. To ensure a thorough probe, SSP Mir announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by the SP of the Punjab Bureau of Investigation (PBI), which will also include two Deputy Superintendents of Police.
The conflict stemmed from the arrest of Jobanpreet Singh in connection with FIR No. 90. Protesters, including Majithia, alleged that the arrest was politically motivated, claiming Jobanpreet was targeted for his role as a polling agent for the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) during recent municipal elections. The situation intensified when protesters discovered Jobanpreet in a room adjacent to the SHO’s office after initially being denied information regarding his whereabouts.
Police have now deployed 12 specialized teams to trace and apprehend those involved in the station incident. Raids are ongoing at multiple locations, including Majithia’s ancestral home in Majitha.
