Patna, April 15: Samrat Choudhary took the oath of office as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Wednesday, marking a historic shift as the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party to head the state government. The swearing-in ceremony at Raj Bhavan followed his election as the leader of the BJP legislature party on Tuesday, occurring shortly after the resignation of longtime leader Nitish Kumar.
The leadership change was prompted by Kumar’s transition to national politics following his recent victory in the Rajya Sabha. Before assuming the top executive post, Choudhary served as the Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister in the outgoing NDA cabinet. Along with the new Chief Minister, Bijendra Prasad Yadav and Vijay Kumar Chaudhary of the Janata Dal (United) were sworn in as Deputy Chief Ministers.
“I express my heartfelt gratitude to the central leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party for reposing their trust in me,” Choudhary stated in a message shared on social media. He affirmed that the appointment was a sacred opportunity to serve the citizens of the state rather than just a political position.
The BJP emerged as the largest party in the Bihar assembly following a significant electoral performance, solidifying its claim to lead the coalition. After being chosen by the legislature party, Choudhary met with Governor Syed Ata Hasnain to formally stake his claim to form the government. The new administration takes charge after the BJP and JD(U) successfully contested the state polls as part of the National Democratic Alliance.
