New Delhi, December 2, 2024: The Supreme Court on Monday urged Punjab farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is currently on a fast-unto-death at the Khanauri border, to guide fellow protestors toward peaceful demonstrations without causing inconvenience to the public.
The court’s remarks came as it disposed of a habeas corpus petition filed after Dallewal’s alleged removal from the protest site by Punjab Police on November 26.
A Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan emphasized the need to balance democratic rights with public convenience. “In a democratic setup, you can engage in peaceful protests, but do not cause inconvenience to people. The Khanauri border is a lifeline for Punjab,” the bench observed.
The court noted that Dallewal had already been released and had persuaded another protestor to end their hunger strike on Saturday.
