Solan lawyers strike over alleged assault on advocate

Solan, Jan 6: The Solan Bar Association on Tuesday observed a day-long strike, protesting what it described as police inaction in an alleged assault case involving a local advocate.

As part of the protest, lawyers marched from the district courts to the office of the Superintendent of Police, raising slogans and demanding immediate registration of an FIR against the accused.

According to the complaint, advocate Rajkumar was allegedly assaulted on January 3 following an altercation during his brother’s birthday celebration. He claimed that the accused abused members of the legal fraternity and later followed him to the Saproon police station.

“I was pulled out of the police station and beaten, even as police personnel were present,” Rajkumar alleged.

The advocate said he remained confined to his home the next day due to trauma. When he approached the police again on January 5, he claimed no FIR was registered.

“I was also denied a proper medical examination. The police said they did not have staff to accompany me to the hospital, and without police presence, the medical examination could not be conducted,” he said.

Members of the Bar Association accused the police of failing to cooperate and said the delay in registering an FIR had deepened concerns within the legal fraternity.

Police officials attempted to pacify the protesting lawyers, stating that action had been initiated in the matter. However, the Bar Association maintained that their protest would continue until an FIR was formally registered.
