Chandigarh, June 2: Punjab outpaced national economic benchmarks by securing a 14.59 percent spike in Goods and Services Tax revenue during May 2026. State Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema announced on Monday that gross receipts climbed to ₹2,400.52 crore, registering a clear increase of ₹305.71 crore over the ₹2,094.81 crore generated during the same timeframe last year.

The significant rise in treasury funds follows an intensive enforcement campaign carried out by the Excise and Taxation Department to elevate compliance. According to comparative public indicators, the state’s commercial revenue growth significantly outdistanced the country’s collective expansion rate, which hovered near 3.2 percent for the month.

“The Gross GST Collection for the month reached ₹2,400.52 crore, marking a significant increase of ₹305.71 crore compared to the ₹2,094.81 crore collected during May 2025,” Cheema stated in a press communique.

The Finance Minister noted that specialized field teams played a definitive part in stabilizing the collection base. The State Intelligence and Preventive Units recovered ₹178.76 crore through local audits, deploying advanced data analytics and targeted vehicle checks. Additionally, officials successfully intercepted a major fake billing operation valued at ₹85.4 crore, leading directly to the arrest of a business director in Ludhiana who allegedly claimed ₹15.56 crore in illicit Input Tax Credits using non-existent commercial entities.

The administration affirmed its commitment to protecting public revenue through modern monitoring systems like e-way bill analysis and FASTag cross-checking. Cheema asserted that the state will maintain an uncompromising approach toward organized tax evasion networks to secure a balanced market for genuine corporate taxpayers.
