New Delhi, July 18: Ladakh-based climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was relocated from his Jantar Mantar protest site to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday morning by security personnel tracking health directives. The prominent education reformer had entered the twentieth day of his hunger strike, seeking administrative accountability regarding nationwide examination system management. Medical professionals confirmed that the activist remains conscious with stable vital parameters under active clinical supervision in the emergency department.
The administration initiated the transfer in accordance with judicial guidance aimed at safeguarding the activist. Delhi Police officials maintained that the action directly aligned with recent instructions from the Delhi High Court, which mandated daily clinical evaluation to protect the citizen’s well-being. Security personnel safely managed the transition despite minor friction from demonstrators at the venue.
New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma affirmed the administrative stance during a briefing with journalists.
“In compliance with the Hon’ble High Court’s order, and based on health conditions and medical advice, Mr Sonam Wangchuk has been moved from here to an appropriate government hospital for much-needed medical intervention and is currently under medical supervision,” Sharma stated.
The relocation occurred just days before a scheduled march toward Parliament, drawing significant attention to the protest venue. On-site observers reported that plainclothes personnel arrived early in the morning to facilitate the transfer, while remaining demonstrators were requested to vacate the area to maintain public order.
A volunteer at the site asserted that the team arrived at dawn to initiate the health check and subsequent transfer.
“Early in the morning, they sent in about ten police officers, claiming they were a medical team. We realised they were police since they didn’t look like doctors, and they ordered all the volunteers to move aside. We kept requesting them to wait, but suddenly they announced that there was a High Court order requiring them to take Sonam Sir away,” the protester declared.
Prominent political figures from various parties had previously visited the venue to check on Wangchuk’s condition, as medical reports indicated a noticeable drop in his weight and blood sugar levels over the course of the three-week fast.
