LUDHIANA, JUNE 5: The Punjab State Women Commission has initiated suo motu action regarding media reports that nine girls have gone missing within a short period in Ludhiana. The statutory panel issued a formal notice to local police authorities on Thursday, demanding a thorough investigation status report by June 8.
Commission Chairperson Raj Lalli Gill confirmed that the oversight body stepped in after widespread discussions across public and digital media platforms highlighted severe concerns over regional child safety. The panel invoked its legal authority under the Punjab State Women Commission Act, 2001, to mandate immediate accountability from city law enforcement.
“Under Section 12 of the ‘Punjab State Commission for Women Act, 2001,’ the Punjab State Women Commission, while exercising its powers, can take Suo-Moto notice of matters related to the violation of women’s rights, respect, and safety,” the formal directive stated. “The Commission views such matters with great seriousness and is committed to ensuring the protection of rights, respect, and dignity of women in Punjab.”
The communication was delivered directly to Ludhiana Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma, establishing a firm timeline to detail specific actions taken by field investigators. The prompt intervention follows mounting public anxiety regarding the safety and security of vulnerable minors and women in the industrial hub.
“Please ensure that a report regarding the action taken is sent to the Commission by June 8 via the email addresses mentioned above,” the notice added, indicating that the matter remains under close scrutiny.
