AMRITSAR, June 1— An operative linked to Pakistan-backed terror outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) was injured in an encounter with Amritsar Police during a weapon recovery operation in the Sultanwind area, officials said on Sunday.
The injured accused, identified as Gurlal Singh alias Harman, a resident of Goindwal Sahib in Tarn Taran, had earlier been arrested along with Karajpreet Singh of Verowal in connection with a firing incident at a furniture shop, allegedly carried out for extortion.
“This is a major breakthrough against ISI-backed terror networks. A terror and extortion module linked to BKI operative Jeevan Fauji has been busted,” said DGP Gaurav Yadav in a post on X.
According to preliminary investigation, Jeevan Fauji had provided a .30 bore pistol to the duo and directed them to fire at the Amritsar shop. The act was meant to intimidate and extort ransom from a relative of the shop owner based in Canada, the DGP said.
Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said Gurlal Singh had disclosed the location of the weapon. He was taken to Sultanwind for recovery but attempted to flee and opened fire on the police team. In retaliatory action, police shot him in the leg.
Gurlal was admitted to Civil Hospital, Amritsar, and is under custody. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
