Chandigarh, July 8 — Panjab University (PU) has increased examination fees by approximately 5% for most undergraduate and postgraduate programs, university officials said on Monday. The annual revision affects a wide range of courses, with PhD and BDS students seeing the steepest hikes.
The exam fee for PhD candidates across all faculties has gone up from ₹16,940 to ₹17,790 — the sharpest increase in this cycle. Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Dental Studies (BDS), PU’s costliest undergraduate program, will now pay ₹11,850 instead of last year’s ₹11,280.
Law students will also feel the pinch, as the LLB exam fee has increased from ₹2,010 to ₹2,120.
PU officials said the fee hike is part of an annual adjustment practice that was observed even when the university’s senate had oversight over financial decisions. “This is a routine revision that accounts for inflation and administrative costs,” said a senior PU official.
In a rare relief, the fee for pre-PhD coursework has been reduced significantly — from ₹10,750 last year to ₹6,300 — making it more affordable for research scholars in the early stages of doctoral studies.
The university has also streamlined its fee collection process, announcing that all examination-related payments from affiliated colleges will now be accepted exclusively through online channels.
The revised fees are set to apply from the upcoming examination session, and notifications have been circulated to departments and colleges for implementation.
