LUDHIANA, Nov 28 — A family in Gujjarwal village is reeling after Canadian authorities informed them that their daughter, earlier believed to have died in a road accident, was actually murdered — allegedly by her husband’s younger brother.
Delta Police in Canada have arrested Gurjot Singh Khaira, charging him with second-degree murder and indignity to human remains in the death of Mandeep Kaur, who had moved to Canada six years ago.
Her father, Jagdev Singh Jaggie, said they were initially told she died in a car crash last month. “I never imagined that Mandeep’s life could be in danger,” he said. “We were still trying to understand the accident when we learned she had been murdered.”
Mandeep married into a family from Lodhiwal near Sidhwan Bet about seven months ago. Jagdev Singh said he was living in another part of Canada with his son when he was informed of the supposed crash. The family performed her cremation on November 6.
It was only afterward that police conveyed a disturbing detail — Gurjot had allegedly moved Mandeep’s body, leading to the initial charge of indignity to human remains. On November 25, Crown Counsel approved the additional charge of second-degree murder.
The family said they learned about the upgraded charge only after Jagdev Singh returned from immersing his daughter’s ashes.
Mandeep’s mother, Jaswinder Kaur, is in shock and seeking answers. Jagdev Singh said he plans to return to Canada to follow the case closely. “I have to know what really happened to my daughter,” he said.
