Amritsar, Dec 26: An alleged shooter was injured in a police encounter during a weapon recovery operation in Amritsar’s Chheharta area, officials said on Friday.
Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the incident took place near a garbage dumping site along Marian Road when the accused, Amritpal Singh alias Roni, allegedly opened fire on a police team.
“The accused took out a loaded .30 bore pistol and fired at the police party,” Bhullar told reporters at the spot. “Despite being warned, he attempted to escape by firing, forcing the police to retaliate in self-defense.”
The accused sustained injuries during the exchange and was immediately taken into custody, police said.
Bhullar said the case stems from a recent complaint by Jaspal Singh, a resident of Ramdas Colony, who alleged that Amritpal Singh and his accomplice Harpreet Niyana arrived in an XUV vehicle and fired two shots at him with the intention to kill.
“Jaspal Singh managed to escape, though he suffered a bullet injury to his leg,” the commissioner said.
During the investigation, police arrested Amritpal Singh, a 25-year-old delivery worker. A separate case involving a commercial quantity of heroin has also been registered against him under the NDPS Act, police said.
The vehicle used in the firing has been recovered, while the second accused, Harpreet Niyana, remains absconding. Police said raids are underway to arrest him.
“Firing incidents in residential areas will not be tolerated,” Bhullar said. “All those involved will be brought to justice.”
