NEW DELHI, FEB 6: Authorities have launched a probe into the death of a young biker who fell into an open pit dug for Delhi Jal Board works in Janakpuri. The victim, Kamal Dhyani, remained unnoticed in the 15-foot-deep trench for several hours before his body was found Friday morning, raising questions about the adequacy of barricades at the rehabilitation project.
The Delhi Jal Board has constituted an inquiry team to verify if the contractor and officials followed mandatory safety protocols. According to the board, the site was supposedly secured, but the fatal accident has led to a review of all ongoing worksites. A circular has already been issued for a multi-departmental inspection to prevent further incidents.
Water Minister Parvesh Verma said that the investigation would be thorough and focused on fixing responsibility for any lapses. “DJB has constituted a high-level inquiry committee to ensure a transparent investigation into the incident. The committee has been directed to inspect the accident site immediately and review safety arrangements, barricading, signage and traffic management,” Verma said in a public statement.
The police investigation is also addressing concerns raised by the victim’s family regarding the assistance provided during their initial search. DCP West Darde Sharad Bhaskar mentioned that while the family visited the local station, further claims of being turned away elsewhere would be examined.
“The police tracked his mobile phone location, which was showing Janakpuri District Park. Head Constable Ramkesh searched for the deceased along with family members for about 2.5 hours, but they could not find him,” Bhaskar said, describing the hours leading up to the discovery of the body. An FIR is being registered as officials prepare to retrieve the motorcycle from the site.
