UK Pledges $4 Million for Ukrainian Grain Shipments to Syria

London 7 February 2025– The United Kingdom will allocate £3 million ($3.7 million) to support the supply of Ukrainian grain and food products to Syria, as the country navigates a post-Assad transition following the fall of the regime on December 8.

With the former opposition now in control, Ukraine was among the first nations to welcome the development, pledging to facilitate grain exports to Syria.

The UK has now formally backed the initiative, with its funding set to support the program, reportedly in coordination with the World Food Program (WFP).

In a statement, the British government noted, “This planned support will provide a lifeline to the most vulnerable in Syria, unlike Russian grain supplies to the brutal Assad regime, which attempted to buy favor while burdening the Syrian state with costly debt.”

The funding is part of a broader £55 million ($69 million) aid package for Ukraine, covering humanitarian and economic assistance under the 100-year partnership agreement signed by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last month.
