Shimla, 15 November 2024: Electricity consumers in Himachal Pradesh will soon have access to prepaid meters, a move that will also be implemented in Punjab. The new system will offer consumers a one percent reduction in rates compared to the current tariff.
A committee has been formed by the state electricity board to plan the installation of these meters, with the report set to be submitted to the managing director. After review, the matter will be sent to the government for approval.
The prepaid meters will not require a security deposit from consumers. The recharging process will be similar to that of mobile phones, with vending machines placed at various locations for easy access.
More than 19.5 lakh consumers will benefit, with smart meters providing real-time consumption and billing updates directly to their mobile phones.
Consumers will also receive SMS alerts before their recharge balance runs out. The prepaid system is expected to reduce electricity theft, as directed by the central government, which has accelerated the implementation of this initiative.
