SHIMLA, APRIL 14: Shimla authorities apprehended a 30-year-old Uttar Pradesh man on April 11, identifying him as the primary supplier for an interstate heroin network active in the Rohru and Chirgaon areas. The suspect, Amit Gupta of Barabanki district, reportedly managed a sophisticated distribution system from Lucknow that utilized hidden drop points for small quantities of the narcotic locally known as chitta.
Law enforcement officials tracked Gupta to Chandigarh following a nearly month-long investigation into his operations. The breakthrough in the case occurred in mid-March when local police intercepted a small-scale distributor, leading investigators to look toward the broader supply chain originating outside the state.
Shimla SSP Gaurav Singh affirmed that the suspect appeared before a local court and remains in police custody. “The accused was produced before a local court, which remanded him to police custody until April 14,” Singh stated.
The investigation began on March 15 after Rohru police arrested 29-year-old Sarthak for possession of 9.17 grams of heroin. During questioning, authorities established backward linkages that identified Gupta as the central figure supplying local operatives. While Gupta initially evaded a police team dispatched to Lucknow, specialized units maintained surveillance until his eventual capture in Chandigarh.
Officials noted that the network relied on a “delivery racket” where drugs were concealed at various physical coordinates for local distributors to collect. This method allowed the kingpin to manage sales while remaining physically distanced from the point of transaction. The probe remains active as police look into further connections within the region.
