Mohali: One of the accused in the murder of kabaddi team promoter Kanwar Digvijay Singh, also known as Rana Balachauria, was shot dead in a police encounter near Lalru on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The deceased was identified as Harbhinder Singh, alias Maddi, who police said was neutralised during an exchange of fire on the Ambala-Chandigarh National Highway.

“He was an active operative of foreign-based gangster Doni Bal and was also involved in multiple firing incidents in Tarn Taran,” a police officer said.

During the encounter, a police official identified as Gulab Singh sustained injuries and was taken to hospital. His condition was reported to be stable.

Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Singh Hans reached the site soon after the encounter. “Our teams had been tracking the accused continuously for the past two days,” he said.

Police said at least 12 teams drawn from the Punjab Anti-Gangster Task Force, the State Special Operations Cell and district police were involved in the operation.

The police said the search for the remaining two suspects — Aditya Kapoor and Karan Pathak — was continuing.

Singh was shot dead in Mohali on Monday evening after two youths approached him on the pretext of taking a selfie, led him aside near a parking lot and fired at him at close range, police said.

“As people tried to chase them, the assailants fired in the air to scare the crowd and managed to escape,” an investigator said.

Following the murder, the Gopi Ghanshyampuria gang claimed responsibility in a social media post, police said.
