Dera Baba Nanak, 14 January 2025: Panic gripped Dera Baba Nanak late this evening when two unidentified individuals on a motorcycle opened fire at a shop in Maniari, owned by Ramesh Chand Ramesh Kumar.

The shopkeeper, who claimed to have been receiving death threats for three months, blamed police inaction for the attack.

Ramesh Chand stated that despite repeatedly alerting the police about the threats, no preventive measures were taken.

“Today, they fired bullets. Next time, we might lose our lives. The police have failed us,” he alleged.

Family members echoed similar concerns, accusing Punjab Police of neglect and failing to provide protection despite the escalating threats.

Heated exchanges between the police and the shopkeeper’s family ensued, eventually spilling into the police station.

DSP Dera Baba Nanak, Joga Singh, visited the site and assured action. “We have launched an investigation and are analyzing nearby CCTV footage.

A live snake was recovered from the scene, which we are also examining,” Singh said, adding that a case has been registered, and efforts to apprehend the accused are underway.

The shopkeeper’s family, however, remains dissatisfied with the assurances, citing continued threats and the potential danger to their lives. The situation highlights rising concerns over safety and law enforcement’s responsiveness in the area.
